EXPO-SCIENCES 2024

OUTAOUAIS REGIONAL FINAL

This year's Outaouais regional final for the secondary/college component was held from March 8 to 10 at the Maison du Citoyen (City Hall) in Gatineau. This year, in agreement with Technoscience Outaouais, the organization responsible for organizing the event, it was decided, given the limited number of projects, that the CMOS Ottawa Centre would award only one prize of $200 to the best project related to meteorology, oceanography, climate change or the environment.

Among the 29 projects presented, the two CMOS representatives, Serge Nadon and Yvon Bernier, identified three projects that qualified for our award.  The Science Fair judges awarded our prize to the following project:

$200 purse for the project
La technologie céphalopode

Mohamed Oussai
Secondaire 5, École secondaire du Versant

This project, in marine oceanography, consists of describing the mechanism of chromatic change on the skin of cephalopods and the functioning of organs and cells that ensure color change. The purpose of this project is to find out if there is the possibility of creating electronic devices to assist humans in work that requires camouflage.

Gatineau;

Nicholas Carrier
, 17 ans, et
Juan David Arandia Roa, 17 ans,

École Polyvalente de l'Érablière

OUTAOUAIS REGIONAL FINAL

This year's Outaouais regional final was held in two components:
- secondary/college component from March 31 to April 2 at the Guy-Sanche Library in Gatineau;
- elementary component on May 19 at École secondaire de la Cité in Gatineau.

This year, it was decided that the CMOS Ottawa Centre would award the best project related to meteorology, oceanography, climate change or the environment for each of the two components.

38 projects were submitted at the secondary/college component. None focused specifically on meteorology or climate change, and only one on oceanography. However, several focused on other environmental areas, such as ecology, recycling, energy conservation, environmental protection, mitigation and adaptation measures, etc.

The two CMOS representatives, Serge Nadon and Yvon Bernier, identified eight projects that qualified for our award.  The Expo-sciences judges awarded our prize to the following project:

$200 prize for the secondary/college component

project Bioplastics

Nicholas Carrier, age 17, and
Juan David Arandia Roa, age 17,

École Polyvalente de l'Érablière

Ottawa Regional Science Fair 2013

The Ottawa Regional Science Fair (ORSF) 2013 was held at Carleton University in April.

As has been the case since at least 1977, the CMOS Ottawa Centre presented awards at the Fair. The criterion is simple: excellence in a meteorological and / or oceanographic theme. The Fair received a great number of projects from students in grades 7 to 12. All of the projects were perused; twelve projects were considered to have meteorological and / or oceanographic content or application; they were selected for judging.  The CMOS judges were Michael Ott (DFO), and Leah Braithwaite (MSC-EC).

First Prize (Certificate, $100.00, school plaque) was awarded to: Shamus McCoy of Immaculata High School.
Project entitled:“Extinction!”

Second Prize (Certificate, $75.00) was awarded to: Maximilian Kelland of Ashbury College.
Project entitled: "Inversions, Jet Streams and Ozone: Exploring high altitude weather".

All awardees also received copies of "Two Ways of Knowing" published during International Polar Year (and demonstrating the integration of western science and Inuit traditional knowledge) courtesy of the Canadian Ice Service as well as a certificate with the CMOS logo and a brief description of the organization and website address. Dr. Malcolm Butler, ORSF Head Judge (Dean of Science, Carleton University) and Jim Reicker (Co-ordinator, Special Awards) also received copies of ‘Two Ways of Knowing’ in recognition of their contributions to the ORSF.
