Hi Folks: I wanted to send out a couple notes about yesterday's events and the very good start to the season. BARRY GOODISON 1. The Barry Goodison event was in my view a smashing success. I think this board should be very proud for stepping up to the plate and filling a gap that was created at the Congress. I think yesterday's event showcased how important our centre is in pushing & supporting forward the CNOS National agenda. Great job - and a special thanks to Bob Jones for creating a template for David Grime's next Patterson award. Great effort for all. ACTION: Bon Jones or Ann M. to pass on the Patterson deck to Grime's office. IAN RUTHERFORD 2. After 10 years Ian is stepping down from the Exec Dir position. I think we ca all agree that Ian has been an excellent Steward of the CMOS organisation. I think we need to do something - perhaps akin to Goodison event. It would be nice to have a presentation of sorts that would include Andrew Bell as part of the hand-over efforst on October 24th. Comments ? ACTION: For Marty and Ann, to coordinate a CMOS thank you to Ian Rutherford. We should also use our CMOS funds for a gift. PRESENTATION ROOM 3. What also came to light was the very nice presentation room on the 3rd floor. That too was a nice surprise and will allow us the option to have this venue when we get special note speakers (CMOS Tour, Christmas Luncheon etc ...). I think that we should use the 4th floor as our standard luncheon room (the access to the bar and food is very convenient). PUBLIC LECTURE 4. What came to light yesterday - and I spoke about it with others at the board meeting including Paul - was the amount of work that was needed to put on the Patterson Medal presentation yesterday. Overall, this was a very small event - but the backroom coordination and logistics was a lot more than expected. So I came to think that perhaps organising a big public speaker event may stretch the resources of this local group a little too much. Overall organising a public event is NOT trivial - and I think we may end up biting off more than we can chew. We are very good at making good luncheon events. Overall it is a well-oiled machine - I fear that a public event may be high in costs and effort - and low in outcome. Essentially the risks are high. 2019-2020 CONGRESS IN OTTAWA and a BUSINESS PLAN 5. Having said that - the Congresses for to 2019 and 2020 is up for grabs. At that last meeting at the Saskatoon Congress the National Council was looking for candidate cities. I stated that 2012 will have been 10 years since out last one in 2010. So assuming that Ottawa will host 2020, then we now have 6 years to walk through our current funding. I know in the past I had an action item to create a sort of "business plan" for the Centre's funds. I think that this may be the right time to action this. So I will coordinate with Yvon, Ann and Paul - and I hope to have a tentative plan for the next meeting (if not November at the latest). ACTION: For Marty to create a business plan to be tabled to the Exec NLT November 2013 SUMMER EXEC MEETINGS 6. The Sumer Exec meetings was a great success as well. It allowed us to be off and running for September., I have been involved with the Exec for many years now - and there is no way that we would have achieved yesterday's success with just a bit of planning ahead of the luncheon. It took the whole summer to set this up and the results certain showed yesterday - and it was fun to move about the city at different pub venues. NEXT SPEAKERS 7. So we have a speaker for October. And we do not have a speaker for Nov and December. We are off to a great start - so let's keep working our networks to find speakers. We are low on Oceanography these days - so I will do the same from my end. We do have candidates but nothing firmed up. ACTION: To all. We need speakers. LUNCHEON VENUE 8. Should we plan to have the November luncheon at the ClockTower or the Gartineau Pub ? ACTION: Decisions on the November venue ? Once again, thanks to all.
