Kent Moore

Professor G.W. Kent Moore, Vice-Principal of Research and Distinguished Professor of Theoretical Geophysics of Climate Change at the University of Toronto is recognized for his insightful, creative, interdisciplinary, and innovative research, which has shaped the understanding of meteorological and climactic systems at northern latitudes and high elevations.

Professor Moore’s work spans an impressive range of topics, including air-sea-ice interactions with deep ocean currents, the global effects of retreating Arctic sea-ice, paleoclimate reconstructions, and the impacts of weather and climate on human physiology at high altitudes. As a result of this research, he served on the International Arctic Science Committee as the Vice-Chair of its Atmospheric Working Group. He led the Labrador Sea Deep Ocean Convection Experiment as well as other international field programs that have increased our understanding of the interactions between the atmosphere, ocean and cryosphere. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles in top disciplinary journals. His research and findings are actively used by scientists, policymakers,  and have informed climate change mitigation strategies in these vulnerable polar and high-altitude regions. In addition to his exemplary scholarship, Professor Moore is also an inspiring mentor and teacher, and a tireless climate and science communicator.
