Professor Emeritus at the University of British Columbia and Honorary Research Scientist at the Institute of Ocean Sciences, he has pioneered new approaches to fisheries management based on the relationship between marine life and its environment. The founding editor of Fisheries Oceanography, he has co-authored many seminal textbooks in his field. He was the first Canadian recipient of the prestigious Japan Prize in 2001, and in 2005, Fisheries and Oceans Canada established an award named in his honour. |
